"Ich wollte eine Mission, und all meiner Sünden wegen, gaben sie mir eine", erzählt Captain Willard und treibt mit seiner Crew die Flußadern Vietnams hinab, um den gefallenen Militärhelden Colonel Kurtz zu töten. Auf der Reise in die Abgründe der menschlichen Seele begegnen ihm das Chaos, die surrealen Exzesse des Kriegs und ein Monstrum, das von sich selbst erlöst werden will.
